CEB Staff Newsletter #20 - 7 July 2023
From the Executive Director

Thank you for your enthusiastic participation in our CEB staff days this week. I truly appreciate the commitment shown by those who travelled from various corners of the Diocese to attend. A special note of thanks goes out to all staff who expertly led the different sessions on our agenda.
Additionally, we extend our heartfelt thanks to the hardworking admin team for their exceptional efforts in organising venues, accommodation and catering for the event. Make the most of your weekend before the students return on Monday to commence Term 3.
Condolences
Kate Lawry has conveyed the loss of her loved Mum, Ann, last night. Many would be aware of Kate’s loving care for her Mum over a long period of time.
We also extend our condolences to Leonie Walsh whose father, Maurice, passed away on 30 June aged 91.
We keep Kate, Leonie and their extended families in our thoughts and prayers at this time.
Announcement of Appointment - St Augustine’s Parish Primary School

Mr Michael Heenan has been appointed as Principal of St Augustine’s Parish Primary School, commencing in this role on Monday 19 June, 2023.
Michael has served the community of St Clement of Rome, Bulleen as Principal since 2011. During this time, he has worked collaboratively and effectively with staff to ensure consistent practices across the school in all areas. Michael has led St Clements to be a high performing school with students at the centre of every consideration and decision. Michael believes that building positive, trusting and respectful relationships is the key to working together with staff and families.
Prior to his appointment at St Clement of Rome, Michael held other leadership positions at Ivanhoe Grammar School and Mother of God Catholic Primary School, Ardeer.
Michael is also an active member of his parish community, taking a particular interest in liturgy and ministries related to the celebration of the Eucharist. His faith leadership is very evident in his conversations and his passion for Catholic education.
We extend sincere appreciation to Bambi Afford, Shaun Mohr and Sue Paulka for their generous and diligent leadership at St Augustine’s during terms 1 and 2 of this year.

People & Development Update
Personal Leave.
A number of CEB employees and Team Leaders have recently enquired about the rules or requirements to provide evidence following a period of personal leave. Including when it is required and what is an accepted form of ‘evidence’ for this purpose.
The following information is taken from the CEB Leave Operating Procedure (July 2022).

Sick Leave
Definition: Leave from work (paid or unpaid) due to an employee’s personal illness or injury.
Evidence Requirements
A certificate from a registered health practitioner, or other evidence that would be satisfactory to a reasonable person, should be supplied by an employee whenever practical.
It is a CEB requirement, aligned to the VCEMEA that:
- any absence of more than two consecutive working days;
- any absences where the number of sick days already taken without a certificate from a registered health practitioner that exceeds five working days in a school year; or
- any absence on the weekday immediately before or immediately after a public holiday so long as that weekday is a working day.
A ‘Registered health practitioner’ means a practitioner registered under the Health Practitioner Regulation National Law (Victoria) Act 2009.
If a certificate from a registered health practitioner, or other evidence that would be satisfactory to a reasonable person, is not provided as required above, leave without pay will result.
In the case of COVID-19, acceptable evidence may be a notice from the Department of Health confirming the employee has returned a positive (confirmed) case for COVID-19.
If an employee becomes ill while on annual leave, the affected days can be re-credited after providing a certificate from a registered health practitioner or other evidence that would be satisfactory to a reasonable person.
If an employee becomes ill while on long service leave (LSL), affected days can be re-credited after providing satisfactory medical evidence that covers at least 8 consecutive days.

Carer’s Leave
Definition: Leave from work (paid or unpaid) for the purposes of caring for an immediate family or household member who is sick and requires the employee’s care and support or who requires the employee’s care due to an unexpected emergency. For this purpose, the term 'immediate family' has the same meaning as an immediate family under the Fair Work Act 2009 (Cth).
Evidence Requirements
A certificate from a registered health practitioner, or other evidence that would be satisfactory to a reasonable person, should be supplied by an employee whenever practical.
It is a CEB requirement that:
- where there is an absence of more than two consecutive working days; or
- where there is an absence on a weekday immediately before or after a public holiday (so long as that day is a working day); and
- where the number of sick or carer’s days taken without a certificate exceeds five in the school year a certificate from a registered health practitioner, or other evidence that would be satisfactory to a reasonable person, must be supplied.
If a medical certificate or satisfactory evidence is not provided, as required above, leave without pay will result.
