Reflection
The Well
Lent is metaphorically speaking, a time for coming to the well. The following poem by Macrina Wiederkehr OSB speaks of wells in our lives. In the gospel story of The Woman at the Well, the image of the well is prominent (John 4:5-420) - Jesus and the women meet at the well and as a result of the encounter both are transformed. This may be a useful metaphor for Christians this Lent. What are your “wells?”
On Being a Well
What makes this world so lovely
Is that somewhere it hides a well.
Something lovely there is about a well
So deep un-piped and real filled
With buckets and buckets
Of that life-giving stuff.
A tap will do in a hurry,
But what makes the world so lovely
Is that somewhere it hides a well!
Sometimes people are like wells
Deep and real natural (un-piped)
Life-giving, calm and cool, refreshing.
They bring out what is best in you
They are like fountains of pure joy
They make you want to sing or maybe, dance.
They encourage you to laugh
Even, when things get rough.
And maybe that's why
Things never stay rough
Once you've found a well.
Some experiences are like wells too.
People create them
They are life-giving happenings
They are redeeming experiences
They are wells,
Wells of wonder,
Wells of hope.
When you find a well and, you will some day,
drink deeply of the gift within.
And then, maybe soon you'll discover
That you've become what you've received,
And then you will be a well for others to find.
So, lift up your eyes and look around you:
Over the mountains, down in the valley
Out in the ocean, over the runways
Into the cities, into the country
Footpaths and highways
Paths in the forest into the hearts of a thirsty people.
Look! And I beg you don't ever stop looking
Because what makes this world so lovely
Is that somewhere it hides a well,
A well that hasn't been found yet.
And if YOU don't find it maybe no one will!
And if you don't be one maybe nobody will find you!

School Visits
On Friday last week I had the pleasure of visiting St Mary’s PS Ararat, St Patrick’s PS Stawell, St Patrick’s St Arnaud and St Augustine’s PS Maryborough. It was great to see the students and staff celebrating St Patrick’s Day with activities and morning teas.
I am looking forward to visiting the students and staff at Edenhope, Casterton and Portland tomorrow.
Recently I came across an article about the balance between play, formal learning and school furniture. This article will affirm the practice of many of our schools and I highly recommend you to read it.
Preparations for our second recruitment trip to Ireland are well underway. This is a joint initiative of DOBCEL and Catholic Education Sandhurst to address staff shortages. Maree Baker, Manager: Human Resources and myself along with two colleagues from Sandhurst will be in Ireland and Northern Ireland from 19 April until 5 May.
Next week we will provide a link to our itinerary and strongly encourage anyone with links to Ireland and Northern Ireland to spread the word of our upcoming trip.

Foundations of Learning.
In 2022, an enthusiastic group of educators from St James’ Sebastopol, St Alipius Ballarat East, St Michael’s Daylesford, Lumen Christi Delacombe and members of CEB met to form a Community of Practice around the Foundations of Learning.
The group gathered with a common purpose to collectively understand the learning process in relation to neuroscience, cognitive psychology and sociology. Foundations of Learning recognises the modern mainstream school as a complex organisation. It also recognises that learning is a highly complex process.
The group connected fortnightly at the participating schools on a rotational basis, providing an opportunity to witness the impact of this learning in real time.
The 2022 Foundations of Learning group will continue to learn alongside one another and also have an opportunity to be a part of the Graduate Certificate in Early Childhood Research, a pilot course being run by The University of Melbourne in 2023.
Testimonials from 2022 participants
“Foundations of Learning, in conjunction with Agile Systems Design, enables educators to form deep understandings about the brain and the neural processes involved in learning; equipping practitioners with the knowledge, skills and confidence to establish rich and dynamic learning environments. A practical and comprehensive approach to education that is transferable to all aspects of the curriculum and focuses primarily on the science of learning. Foundations of Learning supports educators to love what they do and to do it well.”
Kathryn Lynn - St Alipius, Ballarat East
“The Foundations of Learning has been an experience of developing clarity about mental models of learning - linking the concepts from multiple researchers to inform designs for learning. It has been valuable co-learning in making connections between theory and experiences to transform understanding about learning.”
Samantha Meerbach - Senior Education Officer - Learning and Teaching - CEB
