Reflection
More than a break from work… A time for Sabbath…
On the eve of our term break the following reflection is a powerful observation. Those of us in education do not have holidays as a luxury but as a time to renourish and replenish our spirits. If the well keeps giving it goes dry. Enjoy a time of sabbath these coming holidays.
Our culture invariably supposes that action and accomplishment are better than rest, that doing something, anything, is better than doing nothing. Because of our desire to succeed, to meet these ever growing expectations, we do not rest. Because we do not rest, we lose our way. We miss the compass points that would show us where to go, we bypass the nourishment that would give us succour. We miss the quiet that would give us wisdom. We miss the joy and love born of effortless delight. Poisoned by this hypnotic belief that good things come only through unceasing determination and tireless effort, we can never truly rest. And for want of rest, our lives are in danger.
In our drive for success we are seduced by the promise of more: more money, more recognition, more satisfaction, more love, more information, more influence, more possessions, more security. Even when our intentions are noble and our efforts sincere- even when we dedicate our lives to the service of others - the corrosive pressure of frantic overactivity can nonetheless cause suffering in ourselves and others. p. 2

Invitation to Prayer…..
Creator God
In the sanctuary of your love
May we recognise you these holidays
God who enfolds us
God who surrounds us
God in our watching
God in our hoping
God in our resting
God in our knowing
God in our wonderings
May we reflect you in all we do
Amen

From the Executive Director
NCEC Conference
I am currently in Canberra at the NCEC Executive Directors meeting. Yesterday the Rural, Regional and Remote Executive Directors met with Anthony Chisholm, Assistant Minister for Education and Assistant Minister for Regional Development to discuss common challenges and opportunities. We discussed the RRR workforce strategic commitment.
In order to ensure every child in regional, rural and remote Catholic schools has access to at least the same quality of education as their metropolitan peers, we require a workforce strategic commitment that will improve the quality and capabilities of leaders and teachers working in these contexts.
Today all NCEC Executive Directors met to discuss our National Strategic priorities and Governance. This evening we have a reception with various politicians at Parliament House.
Tomorrow we will hear from the Minister for Education, Hon Jason Clare, followed by Fr Frank Brenan who will address the topic:Religious Freedom: What’s Next & Catholic Educators and the Voice.
Leadership Team Meeting
On Friday last week, the Leadership Team met at Lumen Christi Primary School in Delacombe. Thanks are extended to Carmel, her staff and the wonderful students for ensuring that our visit was enjoyable. The agenda was quite varied moving from School Improvement Framework to improving complaint resolution processes to the work connected with the 2021 Wellbeing Team’s service delivery review. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the members of the Leadership Team for their work throughout the Term.
Irish Teachers
I’m excited to advise that our schools with long term teaching vacancies are in the process of interviewing a pool of Irish teachers for the 2024 school year.
End of Term
I would like to extend my heartfelt gratitude to the all staff within our Diocese for your unwavering dedication to our schools and local communities. Your tireless efforts are a shining example of the commitment that drives our students to thrive and succeed. I wish everyone a very well deserved and restful break over the coming two week period.

Australian Teacher Workforce Survey 2023
Informing the future of the teaching profession!
Each year, teachers are telling us about the rewards and challenges of teaching through the Australian Teacher Workforce Survey, to help us understand how to build a more sustainable teaching profession.
To truly understand the modern teaching career, the Victorian Institute of Teaching encourages all registered teachers to participate annually.
Every teacher’s story is unique. Every teacher’s story matters.
The Australian Teacher Workforce Survey takes only 10–15 minutes to complete. It is for all teachers and leaders across schools and early childhood services Australia.
The Victorian Institute of Teaching will email an invitation to all teachers on Monday 9 October 2023.
What’s in the Australian Teacher Workforce Survey?
The Australian Teacher Workforce Survey is part of the Australian Teacher Workforce Data (ATWD) initiative. It is the largest survey of the teaching profession in Australia and is providing the evidence we need to build a sustainable teaching profession.
You will be able to help us learn more about:

Teaching Excellence Program - CLOSING FRIDAY!
The Teaching Excellence Program (TEP) enables highly skilled teachers to advance their capability and confidence for exemplary teaching – Applications close 15 September.
TEP is a year-long professional learning program for highly skilled teachers, supporting and challenging them to become even better teachers. Through the program, teachers analyse their teaching practice to deepen content and pedagogical content knowledge in and across the key discipline areas. They access contemporary, evidence-informed research and apply this learning to their student’s learning needs. Teachers utilise a practitioner inquiry approach to deepen their knowledge, capability and confidence to teach even more effectively in their context.
TEP is open to highly skilled teachers with a minimum of three years teaching experience from the government, Independent and Catholic sectors, including those teaching in alternative settings.
Supported by a team of Master Teachers-in-Residence, TEP teachers engage with national and international expert educators in a diverse range of learning activities, including Conference Days, Discipline Days, Teaching Excellence Learning Community (TELC) Days and Practitioner Inquiry.
Teaching in the disciplines
The program is structured around key disciplines, including:
- The Arts
- English, including English as an additional language
- Health and Physical Education
- The Humanities
- Languages
- Mathematics
- Science
- Technologies
Information Sessions
Information sessions are being held weekly for both teacher applicants and principals to support applicants with their 2024 TEP applications and answer any questions.
We encourage applicants to attend an applicant/teacher information session to find out more about the program and so that we can clarify and support applicants to submit their applications. The principal information sessions are opportunities to hear from Principals-in-Residence. The sessions will provide information for principals to support their teacher applicants through the application process and the year of professional learning that follows. Register for an information session.
If you have questions about the program, please contact Fiona Murphy or more information can be found at Teaching Excellence Program.

Catholic Identity & Mission Update
Sponsorship Applications and Religious Education Accreditation Program (REAP) for 2024
Given the number of teachers requiring appropriate CECV accreditation to Teach Religious Education or Lead in a Catholic School, we are currently reviewing further opportunities for an additional REAP course to commence next year and though 2025. This year we have run two independent REAP programs, both cycles of 2 years, though ACU and YTU offering face-to face learning. The feedback has been very positive, and we appreciate that for many who need to travel that online learning options may be more conducive.
We are exploring for the next cohort a program that involves an online blended mode of learning. This blend will include online synchronous and online asynchronous learning. There will be 2 units per year with each unit consisting of 4 Saturdays (9.30 to 1.30pm) and 8 hours of asynchronous learning in addition.
Last year expressions of interest were invited for REAP – we had nearly 50 interested parties - but when real commitment was required we started the courses with 15 in one cohort and 18 in another and then the problems of with withdrawals over the semesters. We need to maintain a minimum of 15 participants per cohort otherwise this becomes an expense that the system has to wear. For next year’s intake, we would require a minimum of 20 participants to be held for the two-year cycle. Of course, we appreciate that some people’s circumstances change in unforeseen ways. So, all concerned need to plan ahead.
We would very much appreciate you circulating this information to teachers on your staff who require accreditation. Accreditation to Teach Religious Education and Lead in a Catholic School is always the priority for Sponsorship discernment. Please see the link above for teachers to note their interest. Gina Bernasconi and Kate Lawry are very happy help with any concerns or enquiries you may have regarding the program.
SPONSORSHIP applications for all other priorities will be circulated with appropriate forms at the commencement of term 4 and all requiring principal endorsement. Currently we are reviewing our Sponsorship policy, procedures and processes to reflect both system and school priorities and ease of processing. Please note that if a staff member receives sponsorship this year for a 2 year course, particularly REAP, we will only require confirmation of continuing the study. If staff are moving to other Catholic schools in the diocese, they will need the endorsement of their new principal.

Are you interested in dialogue from a Catholic Ed perspective?
Pope Francis says,
Dialogue is much more than the communication of a truth. It arises from the enjoyment of speaking and it enriches those who express their love for one another through the medium of words. This is an enrichment which does not consist in objects but in persons who share themselves in dialogue.
Pope Francis, Evangelii Gaudium, Apostolic Exhortation (2013), n.142
Similarly, from the Congregation for Catholic Education,
The history of Catholic schools is characterized by welcoming pupils from different cultural backgrounds and religious affiliations. In this context, “what is required […] is courageous and innovative fidelity to one’s own pedagogical vision, which is expressed in the capacity to bear witness, to know and to dialogue with diversity...as well as to “respect students’ different intelligences and guide them towards significant and profound learning”. Accompanying pupils in getting to know themselves…
Congregation for Catholic Education (for Educational Institutions) The Identity of the Catholic School for a Culture of Dialogue (2022) n.27, n.28, n.29.

Student Wellbeing Update
Cool At School Together Program (CAST)
The Cool At School Together Program (CAST) is an evidence based early intervention program for children foundation/prep to Year 2 with emerging Disruptive Behaviour Disorders. The program is funded by the Victorian Government in partnership with Grampians Health, Catholic Education Ballarat and the Department of Education.
Schools in the Ballarat/Grampians region are being offered to express their interest in this exciting revised program ready for rollout in 2024!
The Infant, Child and Youth Service at Grampians Mental Health and Wellbeing service will be running a 10-week program for children in years foundation to year two who have disruptive behaviour problems. It includes a child program, a teacher professional development component and a parent program. The program will give children, parents and teachers the opportunity to be part of a fun and supportive group that can improve child behaviour and family relationships and help parents and schools deal with difficult behaviours.
Early identification and intervention for emotional, social and behavioural problems in young children significantly reduces the risk of long-term emotional, social and behavioural difficulties. Sadly, children with these difficulties can be seen as ‘naughty’, rather than as children who are struggling to organise their thoughts, feelings and behaviours. By addressing these difficulties at an early stage, schools can provide appropriate support and resources to children and their families, preventing the problems from escalating or becoming entrenched over time.
If you or your school would like to be a part of the CAST program please contact Beth Fernandes on 5320 3030. Cut off for expression of interest will be the 30th of September 2023.
Rural Health Connect- Psychology Service
Rural Health Connect is an online platform that links people to psychologists over video calls and phone calls. Rural Health Connect originated in Central QLD in response to a clear need for better access to psychologists in rural areas and have now expanded across rural Australia. They deal with drought, bushfire, floods and isolation on top of all of life’s other pressures yet access psychologists at less than a fifth of the rate of people in cities. The lack of professionals in rural areas, long drives to appointments, lack of privacy in small towns and stigma are all deterrents to seeking help.
Rural Health Connect want everyone, regardless of where they live or their life circumstances, to be able to access the psychologist that is right for them. And to be able to conduct their sessions without disrupting their daily lives.
This service is available for rural and regional children, adolescents and adults.
Rural Health Connect mission is to make psychology sessions accessible to all; and to provide a convenient, private and affordable way to conduct sessions.
Please make your families and School Student Wellbeing teams aware of such a valuable resource.
