A Time to Notice…
The Season of Creation is an invitation to stop and notice. A time to be truly aware. Aware of the living and non living earth community. What do we see when we stop?
Franciscan theologian, Ilia Delio, explains that for Catholic Christians, the presence of the risen Christ is experienced in the living of life and through all creation. Maybe this happens best when the time is taken to stop and notice. He explains it in the following way.
Where is this risen Christ? Everywhere and all around us—in you, your neighbour, the dogwood tree outside, the budding grape vine, the ants popping up through the cracks. The whole world is filled with God, who is shining through even the darkest places of our lives.
The following poem speaks of the presence of the Risen Christ. Pope Francis expresses similar themes in chapter two of Laudato Si titled the “The Gospel of Creation” The Season of Creation may be an opportunity for reflection of where the divine is truly encountered.
Easter Metaphor
Creator of springtime,
how can it be that every year
I forget the miracles visiting
the land in the form of fresh leaves,
laughing flowers, greening grass.
Winter holds a strong power over me.
I lose the memory of vibrant vigour,
the unseen energy raising
dead earthen things to awakening life.
Risen One, dwelling within me,
how can it be that I forget you,
your passionate grace tending my soul,
your constant stream of hope
rising up through the dead ground
of my brown, barrened prayer.
I turn to you in this season of spring,
bowing gratefully
to every growing plant, every flourishing flower,
for each one sings an Easter metaphor
full of memory, proclaiming your wild embrace
of my inner life, a life holding the promise
of an eternal return to spring.

From the Executive Director

This week, I am writing from Canberra where I am attending the National Catholic Education Commission (NCEC) leaders’ forum.
Yesterday, I joined my regional-based colleagues as part of the National Catholic Education Rural, Regional and Remote Network for meetings with Senator Anthony Chisholm (Assistant Minister for Education and Regional Development) and Darren Chester (Shadow Minister for Regional Education), to discuss key issues impacting regional schooling including teacher attraction and retention and capital funding.
This morning, Minister for Education Jason Clare MP addressed us, focusing on the Australian Government’s national reform agenda, including pay rises for early childhood educators and lowering early learning fees for families. The Minister acknowledged and thanked the Catholic sector for our work educating 1 in 5 Australian children, and in particular, the role we are playing in leading improvement through literacy and numeracy uplift programs.
It is vital our sector engages closely with government at all levels, and this annual opportunity, facilitated by the NCEC, is an important one.
In many ways it is timely that R U OK Day should be tomorrow, as we approach the end of a very busy Term 3. As always, I encourage everyone who works in our schools and offices to be cognisant of not only their own wellbeing, but also of those around them. Tomorrow is a reminder that it is helpful to ask R U OK? any day of the year.
I offer my very best wishes to staff and students from across the diocese travelling to Melbourne to attend the Victorian Catholic Education Authority (VCEA) graduation dinner for Year 12 ATSI students on Friday evening, and to our Principals and leaders who depart for a pilgrimage tour to Ireland on Sunday.
With best wishes
Tom Sexton

Leadership Development – Pilot Program offerings for 2024
In 2024, significant progress has been made on the co-creation of the DOBCEL strategy 2035, as well as the development of a DOBCEL competency framework focused on school leadership. While the final detail of this work is still being refined, we have an emerging sense of what the results will be.
To ensure that future leadership programs are aligned with our strategic direction and provide the opportunity to develop the right skills and behaviours, a series of pilot leadership workshops are being offered in 2024.
These programs are designed to build capability in areas aligned to our strategic direction with the intention of integrating these programs into a more comprehensive leadership development calendar in 2025.
Cost - Free!
Each of these programs will be run as a pilot program with the costs of the program covered by DOBCEL.
As part of attending the program, all participants agree to provide their identifiable feedback on things such as the program's contents, effectiveness, and suggestions for improvement. Participants will be asked to provide feedback at the conclusion of the workshop and may also receive follow-up contact after the workshop for further feedback.

AI Working Party – Update on Progress
In recent months, a select group of CEB staff, educators, and principals have been exploring and discussing the applications of Generative AI within our diocese. These virtual sessions have been highly informative, allowing participants to exchange insights and experiences. Currently, the group is examining various frameworks to guide broader adoption and provide recommendations for schools interested in using GenAI.
Our goal is to offer greater clarity and context for schools navigating this rapidly evolving field. Some members are developing small case studies that demonstrate how these align with our chosen framework, along with other support materials for schools. We are aiming to have some of this work shared with schools early Term 4.
