Reflection Piece - Saying Goodbye…
November is a special time when our Catholic and other Christian Traditions remember and pray for those who have died.
This week’s reflection from Jim Quillinan explores the concept of Saying Goodbye.
Invitation to prayer……
Litany of Remembrance
God of Compassion
In the rising of the sun and in its going down.
We remember them
In the blowing of the wind and in the chill of winter.
We remember them
In the blueness of the sky and in the warmth of the summer.
We remember them
In the rustling of the leaves and in the beauty of autumn.
We remember them
In the beginning of the year and when it ends.
We remember them
When we are lost and sick at heart.
We remember them
When we have joys we yearn to share.
We remember them
So long as we live, they too shall live.
We will remember them
Amen

From the Executive Director

I trust those schools who took yesterday’s Melbourne Cup public holiday enjoyed the break.
Last week’s Term 4 gathering of Principals in Horsham was special as we farewelled retiring and departing Principals, and acknowledged those who have taken up interim roles in support of our system of schools.
I particularly thank and acknowledge Nerrida Holland (St Mary’s Catholic Primary School, Warracknabeal), Jack Lenaghan (Sacred Heart Primary School, Colac), Suzie McManus (Sacred Heart Primary School, Casterton) and Vince Muscatello (St Paul’s Primary School, Mildura) who were in attendance at this significant event. Regrettably, not all our departing and retiring Principals were able to attend and Carmel Barker (Marian College), Tim Bourke (St Patrick’s, Camperdown), Leigh Bradshaw (Our Lady Help of Christians, Wendouree), and Marg Blythman (St Joseph’s College, Mildura) were recognised in absentia.
Further exciting co-design and deep work was also done on planning for the activation of the DOBCEL 2035 strategy, commencing next year. We look forward to providing more details in the coming weeks.
As part of the gathering, the four Message Sticks which have been travelling among schools around the diocese to mark the 150th Anniversary of the formation of the Diocese of Ballarat, were brought together for a final blessing. The four Message Sticks will now find a home in a prayer space within each of the Catholic Education Ballarat zone offices.
A selection of photos from the two days is below.
Best wishes

School visit/CPR activation - St John's Ambulance Defibrillator donations
Today, St Joseph’s in Warrnambool received a demonstration of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) as part of the first national Drive-a-thon organised by St John Ambulance. St Brendan's, Coragulac and St Patrick's, Camperdown have received Defibrillators.
The initiative is part of a St John Ambulance effort to save lives and empower communities across the country. The Drive-a-thon began in Darwin on National Restart a Heart Day, Wednesday 16 October, and will conclude in Adelaide on Saturday 14 December, just in time for the St John Ambulance Carols by Candlelight, which will be broadcast nationally on Channel 7.
Over 60 days, volunteers will travel more than 16,000 km across every state and territory, delivering free CPR training to 5,000 Australians and installing $50,000 worth of lifesaving Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs).
The initiative is designed to enhance community safety and empower communities across the country.
Our Catholic schools are pleased to partner with St John's on this extremely important project.

Early Career Teacher Check-ins Term 4
As planning for the 2025 Early Career Teacher Program begins and we reflect on the 2024 Program, we would like to engage with Early Career Teachers (ECTs) to provide the opportunity to engage and reflect on their successes and an opportunity to discuss where additional development can be provided at a system level.
To enable this, the Early Career Teacher program in Term 4 is individual check-in conversations intended to share the successes and challenges of 2024. ECTs will be asked to share their experience engaging in the early career teacher program, their experience in schools as an ECT and for CEB staff to provide any further individualised advice or feedback during the call.
Anyone who has participated in an early career teacher session in terms 1,2 and 3 should have received an email inviting you to participate. If you are yet to book your conversation in, please click here to book. If you have not been able to participate in the Early Career Teacher Program in 2024 but would like a check-in conversation please use the above link to book.
We look forward to working with Early Career Teachers from around the Diocese again in Term 4 and into 2025!
Catholic Dialogue Schools Consortium
How can the Catholic Dialogue School promote genuine dialogue? & What is the impact of Relativism and the Colourful School on the schools across our diocese?
These are questions of the moment for our diocesan schools. We have this shrinking window in time to capture the religious imaginations of our learners – young and older. With this purpose in mind please take up our invitation to hear Prof. Didier Pollefeyt and Drs Jan Bouwens in Bendigo Feb 24th and 25th 2025.
Given the business of that February week, please register your interest in attending online at least, via the flyer. It’s not a contract – only an expression of interest and we need your engagement with this learning. It contributes another vital building block in understanding Catholic Identity for our current context. If you have any questions, please contact: gbernasconi@ceoballarat.catholic.edu.au

Year 5 and Year 11 Positive Gender Relations Student Forum
Opportunity for Central Zone Primary Schools
The focus of the forum will be centred around a positive approach for all students to be active bystanders that demonstrate respect and recognition of the rights of others. This will be taken from the Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships ‘age-appropriate’ curriculum for Year 5 and 6 students -Curriculum Topic 8: Positive Gender Relations.
Facilitators will provide a safe and proactive session where Year 11 students will lead a discussion for small groups of Year 5 students. The students will create something to take back to their school to promote proactive peer support and help seeking strategies that can be used in response to instances of gender-based violence. The work can then carry on into 2025 as these students will be Year 6 and Year 12 school leaders.
This event will be held on Thursday 21st November, at the Ballarat Academy of Teaching and Leadership, where students, accompanied by their teachers, will participate in a 90-minute session.

Expression of Interest for Schools Parents and Resilient Kids (SPARK) Program in 2025 for Primary schools in the Central Highlands Area.
The Schools Parents and Resilient Kids (SPARK) program is an evidence-based early intervention program for children Foundation/Prep to Grade 2 with disruptive and challenging behaviours. Funded by the Victorian Government in partnership with Grampians Health, the Department of Education, and Catholic Education Ballarat, the program offers schools in the Ballarat/Grampians region the opportunity to participate in 2025.
The program involves screening all children in these grades to identify those with mild to moderate levels of disruptive and challenging behaviours. Selected children and their parents participate in the evidence-based early intervention program. The SPARK Program, run by the ICYMHWS aims to improve child behaviour, family relationships, and assist parents and schools in managing difficult behaviours. The program also facilitates referrals to local agencies for additional support if needed.
The components of SPARK are summarised below:
- Child program: in the 10-week program, children learn social and emotional skills such as problem-solving, emotion regulation, and empathy in small groups. Let’s keep the letter to one page in length. It also promotes prosocial behaviours like cooperation, kindness, and respect, fostering supportive environments in both the classroom and home.
- Teacher professional development: professional development sessions are offered to all teachers as well as ongoing support for implementing classroom strategies that are parallel to the SPARK program. Development of behavioural management plans are also offered to teachers.
- Parent/carer program: The Bringing Up Great Kids (BUGK) program is offered to all parents and carers in the school. BUGK gives caregivers insights into their parenting style and practical strategies, reinforcing the social and emotional skills their children are developing. There is also parent/carer support from our Peer Carer Support Worker.
For more information or to express interest in the SPARK program, please contact Brooke Nester on 0447 946 223 or bnester@ceob.edu.au or Beth Fernandes GV Health on 5320 3030.

Making a Scene at Christmas - Bookings

Making a Scene at Christmas will be on display in Bridge Mall Ballarat from 4 December and bookings are available for schools.
When children visit this display of over 500 Nativities they experience Nativities that illustrate the story of Jesus birth as told in the Gospels of Matthew and Luke. They get to see and smell frankincense and myrrh and to hold coins that date back to the reign of Herrod, that is the time of the birth of Jesus.
The other Nativities are from twelve African nations, fifteen American nations, eighteen Asian nations and twenty-five European nations – most hand crafted and some highlight issues of social justice or theological interpretation.
We can work with up to fifty children at a time and a session usually lasts for 90 minutes.
If you are a Ballarat school, and you want to book in a day or session please contact Fiona on 0437 426 268.
