Reflection Piece - Advent, A time to Notice

This Sunday, 1st December, is the First Sunday of Advent.

What is Advent about?

Have you ever sat completely still by the waters edge? By a river, creek or ocean at dawn? Watching and listening? In this time you may have noticed sounds, movements, flora and fauna, or changes in the light. Sitting there in peace, you may have noticed numerous things that happen each and every day, unnoticed, year in and year out. Extraordinary beauty, an exquisite scene before you. This is the unfolding story of creation each day. In the stillness we notice, we are aware. Advent is an invitation for Christians to be still and notice, to be still and to be aware. In this time of noticing there may be an opportunity to see God moments unfold before our very eyes. Possibility for the Emmanuel  “God with us” being revealed. Moments of when God is consistently being birthed. Advent is an opportunity for Christians to experience a dawn time like the scene by the waters edge in the early morn.

Aunty Elizabeth Pike expresses it in the following way while also reflecting upon the role of Mary of Nazareth, Mary who birthed the Face of God.

Down through the ages and throughout biblical history, the Creator has always chosen ordinary people to show us the way to a fuller life. These ordinary people become extraordinary because they listen to a call from the creator deep within their heart and follow it in trust. For Christians, Mary, mother of Jesus, is the classic example. This special listening can only be achieved by living close to the law that the Creator placed in the hearts of all people. Be still and know that I am God.

Aboriginal people were very aware of their strong connectedness with the Spirit world through “listening”  to creation. Miriam-Rose Ungunmerr from Daly River points out: “It is a quality my people call Dadirri - an inner deep listening, a quiet stillness and awareness.”

The other part of Dadirri is waiting. Our culture tells us not to hurry things up; we let things follow their natural course, like watching the moon in each of its phases, or waiting for the rain to fill our rivers and waterholes and water our thirsty earth. We wait for bush foods to ripen and we wait for a long time when someone dies, owning our grief, allowing our hearts to heal slowly in the proper way. There is nothing more important than attending to the present moment. p.23 24

Woman of Summer!

Help us have strength and courage

To overcome our fears and confusion

As we move out of darkness into light

And give birth to this new life of love

In the Jesus Dreaming.  p.172

From the Executive Director

As you are likely aware, the DOBCEL Board has been working with Catholic Education Ballarat and school communities this year to develop a new strategy to shape the direction of our system of Catholic schools over the next decade and beyond.

The DOBCEL Strategy 2035 document is now complete and will be published and unpacked in detail with all members of the DOBCEL community early in the new year.

This is an exciting time of opportunity for all of us working within our system of schools. I encourage you to read an important message (below) from Chair of DOBCEL, Terry Harney and myself, outlining some of the key themes and directions of the new strategy.

This week I would also like to highlight the system initiative: Enhancing Catholic School Identity. Catholic identity is a shared responsibility for everyone in Catholic Education in the Diocese of Ballarat, especially our school and CEB leadership teams. It is a whole-school and whole-system mission that extends beyond Religious Education to every domain of learning and interaction.

In today’s context, leading a Catholic school requires more than faith - it demands the ability to integrate Catholic identity into all aspects of school life, from literacy and numeracy, to parent engagement and policy-making.

THCT605 is a foundational course designed to align with DOBCEL Strategy 2035, equipping leaders to guide their schools toward becoming Catholic Dialogue Schools. In a supportive and collegial environment, this course will build your knowledge and skills to confidently respond to the question: Enhancing Catholic School Identity - What do I do now? I encourage you to explore further information and consider expressing interest in this foundation course via the Catholic Education section of this newsletter.

A reminder to Principals we have our final Diocesan Leadership Gathering (DLG) meeting of the year from 10-11.00 am tomorrow (Thursday) via VC.

Thank you to Damascus College for the invitation to last night’s graduation mass at the Cathedral and St Columba’s Primary School for hosting me last Friday. I very much enjoyed both these opportunities to engage with school communities.

Best wishes to all school communities as you combine business as usual with end of year farewells, graduations, and transition to 2025 programs.

Best wishes

Tom Sexton, Executive Director

Our Executive Director Tom Sexton prioritizes visiting schools around the diocese to better understand their contexts and needs. Big thanks to St Columba's, Ballarat North Co-Principals Bambi Afford and Shaun Mohr and staff along with school captains Hugo, Leo, Milla and Aiden for their wonderful hospitality and insights last Friday.

DOBCEL Strategy 2035 - Update

Update for members of the DOBCEL community

As you are likely aware, the Diocese of Ballarat Catholic Education Ltd (DOBCEL) Board has been working with Catholic Education Ballarat and school communities this year to develop a new strategy to shape the direction of our system of Catholic schools over the next decade and beyond.

The development of the ‘DOBCEL Strategy 2035’ has followed a process of co-design with significant input from school community representatives and facilitation by globally recognised Finnish educator Professor Pasi Sahlberg and Dave Runge, Director of Future Schools.

The strategy document is now complete and will be published and unpacked in detail with all members of the DOBCEL community early in the new year. There will be an executive summary version of the strategy that is designed to be used in schools and communities to engage everyone in its implementation.

The opportunity for us to collectively steward the system - as we seek to step forward boldly and bravely to shape our future - is both an immense privilege and responsibility. We are grateful for your ongoing support as together we take this journey toward our vision: As partners in Catholic education and open to God’s presence, we pursue fullness of life for all.

While we are currently a good system of Catholic schools, building on strong foundations and a rich heritage, we must aspire to courageously imagine a new tomorrow - to move from good to great. As such, the strategy represents a pivotal moment for the DOBCEL community and marks an important phase in our ongoing development.

Research underpinning the strategy has shown how the world continues to change around us. Mega trends including climate change, growing inequalities, increasing secularisation, demographic shifts, technological advancements, and the nature of work, learning and living, along with the persistent educational disadvantage for students outside metropolitan areas, have made it clear that standing still as a system is not an option. If we are to realise our vision of fullness of life for every student in our care, we must grow and adapt, think differently, and present a bold and brave, but not reckless plan, for the future.

In formulating the DOBCEL Strategy 2035, we have also examined school systems around the world which have improved academic standards, while also fostering excellent student faith and holistic development, well-being, and a strong sense of belonging. This is the type of schooling system we aim to be.

Specifically, for DOBCEL Strategy 2035, a high-performing system of Catholic schools emphasises compassion, service, and respect for human dignity, embedded in the teachings of Jesus Christ. This holistic approach aims to develop well-rounded individuals who are not only knowledgeable but also morally responsible and spiritually grounded. Catholic Identity will underpin the five key pillars:

  1. Collaborative Cultures
  2. Engagement and Belonging
  3. School as Community
  4. Rich Pedagogical Practices for Deep Learning and Well-being
  5. Sustainable Stewardship

By focusing on these five pillars grounded in Catholic identity we believe we can elevate our system of schools and best serve students and families over the next decade and beyond.

To realise this aspiration, it is imperative that the greatness existing in every person aligned with DOBCEL is unleashed. It is by investing emotionally, personally and financially in the social and human capital across our system that greatness will be enabled. Harnessing, growing, and unleashing the collective wisdom of those connected to our system will provide the energy to innovate and adapt, in turn becoming high-performing as a system.

Key aspects of DOBCEL 2035 are trust in staff and collaboration as drivers of improvement. We recognise our staff as highly qualified and dedicated professionals. Like all professionals, they deserve ongoing development and leadership to stay abreast of the latest research-informed practices, to have more opportunities to collaborate with one another, and to refine both the art and science of their profession.

As we move from strategy to action and permanent practice in 2025 and beyond, co-design will continue to be the leading principle.

Moving forward, we will work to build a DOBCEL culture that is faithful to our Catholic identity and promotes both collaboration and innovation, and actively seeks out and learns from existing examples of excellence within our diocese, nationally, and globally.

A range of activities is planned at both school and diocesan levels to begin actioning the new plan from early 2025.

These are exciting times of opportunity for our community of schools. We look forward to engaging with you further as DOBCEL 2035 is unpacked in more detail and activated into next year and beyond.

With best wishes for a happy and holy festive season ahead.

Tom Sexton - Executive Director        Terry Harney - Chair

Swan Hill Youth Arts Festival, 2024

The Youth Arts Festival returned this year on Market Day in Swan Hill, with the event including an exhibition of student work from district schools.

Artworks from St Mary MacKillop College featured in the exhibition and highlighted the talented Art students we have at MacKillop.  Work from Year 7 - 10 Visual Art was displayed, with Ryley Fogarty winning the People’s Choice Award and Scarlet Grey receiving a special mention for her piece.

The event was a great success, with a fantastic turnout and much positive feedback from visitors.

Congratulations to those students who had work on display.

St Patrick’s Primary School Celebrates 100 Years at Drummond Street

St Patrick’s Primary School, Ballarat, marked a century at its Drummond Street location with a series of celebrations, bringing together past and present students, staff and families. kicked off with the 100 Years Cocktail Party, where alumni and community members reminisced about the school’s rich history while celebrating its enduring legacy and looking through historical photos. Guided tours also offered a glimpse into the school’s evolution, showcasing how its facilities and approach to education have adapted over the decades.

One of the most memorable moments of the centenary celebrations was the commemorative Mass, where the community gathered to reflect on the school’s foundation and strong Catholic traditions. Fr. Ed Maloney spoke about the importance of passing on the school’s spirit through generations. In a touching gesture, Joan Matthews, one of the school’s first female teachers, handed a candle to her former student Fred Reus, who then passed it to current student Massimo, symbolising the continuity of St Patrick’s legacy.

Peter Pollard, a former dux of the school, also shared his inspiring story, reflecting on how his time at St Patrick’s and bringing along the Biggles book he was awarded in 1951. Families also enjoyed a relaxed picnic on the school grounds, fostering a sense of community that remains central to St Patrick’s ethos.

The celebrations concluded with a dress-up day, where students wore costumes reflecting styles from the past century, bringing history to life. The events have marked the school’s vibrant heritage and its commitment to fostering learning, faith and community. St Patrick’s Primary School looks forward to the next 100 years with the same spirit of innovation and inclusivity that has defined its journey so far.

Enrol in the THCT605: Enhancing Catholic School Identity:

Catholic identity is our shared responsibility, it resides with anyone who chooses to work within Catholic Education in the Diocese of Ballarat. It resides most critically however with our Leadership in every school and CEB. Catholic Identity is a whole of school, whole of system undertaking – it doesn’t live in the silo of RE and can’t be relegated there. The religious dimension of learning in a Catholic school/DOBCEL reaches into every domain of learning and involves everyone – to greater and lesser degrees. Our principals and Leadership Teams are at the pinnacle and need to be able to identify and communicate the religious dimension of literacy or numeracy, the ways in which Catholic Identity informs conversations with parents and policy making and so on.

However, in the 21C in this diocese, being Catholic, being faithful – while key – isn’t enough to lead.

THCT605: Enhancing Catholic Identity is being offered in our diocese as a foundational and substantive piece to nuance and integrate further aspects of DOBCEL STRATEGY 2035. Each piece will be pivotal to creating the theological shifts towards a Catholic Dialogue school for you as leaders of faith in your respective Catholic school/CEB.

In an environment that is inviting, collegial, engaging and supported, THCT605 will enable you to develop knowledge and skills so that when asked the question: Enhancing Catholic School Identity: What do I do now? You’ll have responses that are confident, faithful to the Tradition and faithful to the context and lives of our learners.

Take the leap of faith – enrol and invite your DP, REL, Director of Faith & Mission or other members of your leadership team to accompany you!

It is intended that this will be the predominant professional learning for faith leaders in 2025 and the intent is it will replace the REL conference.

Please register by 6 December via this registration form: https://forms.office.com/r/rW09SeRMpj

Strengthening Our Understanding of Relationships Education and Sexuality Education Across Our Diocese

The two key areas for the Secondary Religious Education Leaders Gathering this semester were Respectful Relationships Education and Sexuality Education (RRRR). This included an introduction to the new resources that have recently been released for ‘Rights Resilience and Respectful Relationships.’

As Respectful Relationships Education and Sexuality Education are not the exclusive responsibility of Religious Education, an invitation was sent to other members of each school community such as Wellbeing Leaders and HPE teachers who are involved in working in this very important area. Over the day, 30 members of staff from across the Diocese joined the gathering.

The day began by engaging with the relevant Catholic theology which is the foundation of these curriculums. Participants were invited to engage in professional conversations and to be open to new understandings of Church teachings and future directions in Catholic Sexual Ethics.

The session devoted to Respectful Relationships was facilitated by Christian Brown and Trevor Edwards from the Central Highlands RRRR team as well as Nicola Grayson from the South Western RRRR team. Initially, participants explored the importance of RRRR education within a secondary school and then they were introduced to the new RRRR resources.

The day concluded by exploring some practical ideas such as:

  1. Collating questions RELs encounter with respect to teaching RRRR and Sexuality in order to develop Catholic responses.
  2. Exploring elements of the ‘Fullness of Life Relationships and Sexuality Education’ resource that supports the teaching of RRRR including the Church teachings around certain issues.
  3. Developing an overview of how the Awakenings Curriculum, RRRR and Fullness of Life resources align with and support each other.

Learning and Teaching Updates

GENERAL NEWS

DOBCEL Learning and Teaching Team Farewells

As we move into the final phase of the year, the DOBCEL Learning and Teaching Team are preparing to farewell two valued members.

Helen Bettes’ name is synonymous with education in the Ballarat Diocese. As a teacher, Literacy Leader, Reading Recovery Coach and Education Officer, Helen has impacted the learning and lives of thousands of children, and the practice of countless colleagues. Helen writes:

‘I am grateful for so much…the varied roles that fostered professional relationships within the Catholic Education community and especially for the children who have touched my life in countless ways.  I feel blessed and very fortunate to have experienced a career that has energised and rewarded me every day.’

While we know the future holds many new possibilities for Helen, we hope she retains links to DOBCEL, where her work will always be remembered with respect and gratitude.

Shay King has been with CEB for the past three years after joining us on secondment from St Aloysius’ in Redan. Through her work as an Education Officer, Shay has brought her expertise, energy and discernment to school communities in the Central, Southern and Mid North Zones.

Shay’s work and dedication has been greatly appreciated by her colleagues both in the office and in school communities. In the spirit of Pope Francis, Shay has always encouraged those she has worked with to continue to move forward, to take a step beyond. Shay will be taking another step forward herself as she joins the staff of St Michael’s Daylesford where she will be teaching a Foundation / Yr 1 class. No doubt Shay’s experience with CEB will be a huge asset to St Michael’s.

SECONDARY NEWS

English Curriculum Project (ECP) in 2025

Seminar 8 - English Assessment - Thursday, 28 November at 3.30

Part of any curriculum design should include a ‘backwards by design’ thought process where we look at what the formative and summative outcomes of a unit are and how we need to teach students the skills to get them there.

There will be plenty of time for questions (happy to take questions based on the in-person day or just around assessment in general).

Our big area of focus for the session is:

What kind of formative and summative assessment tasks could we need to design to address the Modes that are listed in the Victorian Curriculum 2.0?

We will explore formative tasks and link them to feedback and the kinds of assessment rubric we might use.

We will also look at summative tasks and consider how we can make them a genuine opportunity for students to put together all of their formative learning experiences. A brief consideration of how AI can be a helpful tool for this kind of planning will also be covered.

Forum 4 – Linking the Victorian Curriculum 2.0 with the VCE - Thursday, 5 December

We will focus on two key areas that link the Victorian Curriculum 2.0 and the VCE.

  1. What place do audio visual texts have in the 7-10 space now that the VCE no longer requires an analysis of them? They are part of the requirement for the Victorian Curriculum 2.0 but do they have to be used or created as part of a backwards mapping from VCE process now?

Kirstin will suggest how and when we can create and analyse these texts.

  1. Forms of writing. In the light of VCE changes, it is clear that students need as much opportunity as possible to create a range of texts using different forms and for a range of purposes before they begin Years 11 and 12. Kirstin will explore the teaching possibilities of this writing and also how we might do this without resorting to miniature versions of VCE units in 7 – 10.

There will be plenty of opportunity for questions in both sessions and we look forward to seeing you there
