Reflection - Pope Leo XIV

On 8 May, Robert Francis Prevost, 69, became the 267th Pope. Many people are wondering Who is he? And What is he like? Much has already been written about him. He is the first Pope originating from The United States, he is considered as much a cardinal from Latin America because of the many years he spent as a missionary in Peru. Some of his own reflections from over the years give an account of what deeply concerns him. His following quotes share some insight into his wisdom.

"We are often preoccupied with teaching doctrine...but we risk forgetting that our first task is to teach what it means to know Jesus Christ," Vatican News 2023

"Our work is to enlarge the tent and to let everyone know they are welcome inside the Church." 2023 Press Conference

“We must seek together how to be a missionary Church, a Church that builds bridges, dialogue, always open to receive, like this square, with open arms. Everyone, everyone who needs our charity, our presence, dialogue and love”  First Address, St. Peter’s Square, 8th May 2025

Pope Leo XIV

Augustinian Moderate American

69 years old

Strong ties to Latin America

Ministered for many years in Peru

“Holy One beyond all names

Eternal Wellspring

May love rise again in us today

With food for every table

Shelter for every family

And reverence for every life.

Forgive us our failings in love

And free us from all falseness

That the light of our souls may shine

And the strength of our spirits endure

For earth and all its people

This day, tonight and forever.

Amen.”

(The Lord’s Prayer.

Celtic version

By John Philip Newell)

May Pope Leo be blessed in his ministry.

May it be so.

Amen

From the Executive Director

Today, schools from the Mid-North Zone came together in Horsham for their Network Collaboration Day. These gatherings continue to be a vital opportunity to engage with the DOBCEL Strategy 2035, strengthen connections across schools, and build collective insight into the work ahead. Through meaningful dialogue and shared reflection, our school communities are helping shape a culture of collaboration that supports growth, innovation and shared purpose across our Diocese.

Tomorrow, we look forward to welcoming school and system leaders back to Horsham for the Term 2 Diocesan Leadership Gathering. This gathering is a chance to pause and reflect, to connect with colleagues, and to continue shaping what future-focused leadership looks like in our context. Grounded in Strategy 2035, DLG will also provide an opportunity to learn more about the Collaboration Innovation Research Prototypes (CIRPs), with details on how to get involved and where to access further information.

The next Network Collaboration Day will take place in Robinvale on Tuesday 27 May, with schools from the Northern Zone coming together to continue this important work. I look forward to bringing schools from the Northern Zone together to listen, learn, and lead with purpose.

Thank you for your continued commitment to our students, staff and communities. We look forward to seeing many of you at DLG and continuing our shared journey of learning and connection.

With best wishes,

Tom Sexton, Executive Director

Showcasing our Catholic Schools in Action

Celebrating the Feast Day of St Catherine, Siena Catholic Primary School Lucas

To celebrate the Feast Day of  St Catherine, Siena Catholic Primary School Lucas, shared in a fantastic day of prayer, language learning, food and activities. Siena CPS is a Teacher as Co-Learner school where students are immersed in Italian language with our staff on a daily basis.

The school has recently appointed a Language Assistant Donato, who originates from Crispiano, Italy and was a head chef across multiple countries as his past profession. Due to the fantastic skills of Donato, students from all grades participated in hands-on language learning opportunities. This included creating various types of pasta from scratch, bruschetta and passata, with all the fresh vegetables and herbs coming straight from our school garden. Bellissimo!

Throughout the day the students were immersed in a variety of cultural and religious activities, learning more deeply about St Catherine, table fellowship- sharing in a pizza lunch, and learning further Italian words and phrases.

As part of the town Siena in Italy, students delved into the 'contradas' (the Italian word for a district or neighborhood) of Siena, from which the school house groups are named, Torre/Tower, Onda/Dolphin, Leocorno/Unicorn and Drago/Dragon.

The day was finished with a beautiful liturgy to celebrate St Catherine of Siena, followed by our annual mock 'Il Palio' horse race. The students raced on hobby horses around our quadrangle, mimicking the famous bi-annual horse race between the Contrade of Siena in the Piazza del Campo.

Overall it was an incredible day of learning and fun! Fantastico e divertente!

Support for Schools in SSP (Systematic Synthetic Phonics) Selection

On Thursday, 8 May, educators from across the Diocese of Ballarat gathered both in person and online for a professional learning session focused on supporting schools in the selection of a Systematic Synthetic Phonics (SSP) program.

With representation from each of the four zones, the session aimed to deepen understanding of effective phonics instruction and its vital role in early reading success.

The session aligned with DOBCEL’s commitment to a 10-year Primary Literacy Strategy, delivered through Flare. This strategy supports schools by providing:

  • Tailored professional development for primary educators

  • A knowledge-rich literacy curriculum with aligned resources and assessments

  • Systems to track student progress and provide effective interventions

  • Strong literacy leadership development

  • System-wide monitoring and reporting on literacy improvement

A key focus was the importance of Structured Literacy, where instruction is explicitly sequenced from simple to complex, ensuring students master foundational skills before progressing.

Seven widely used SSPs were presented by educators from our schools:

  • Little Learners Love Literacy – St Patrick's Camperdown

  • Sounds Write – Siena Lucas

  • InitiaLit – Sacred Heart Mildura

  • SpellEx – Sacred Heart Mildura

  • PhOrMeS

  • No Nonsense Phonics – St Paul's Mildura

  • UFLI – St Joseph's Redcliffs

Presenters provided insights into each program's structure, costs, training, suitability, available resources, and the reasons behind their school’s choice.

Key reflections from participants included:

  • The value of learning from peer schools to make informed decisions

  • The importance of aligning program choice with each school’s specific context

  • Acknowledging that change requires careful planning and management

  • The benefit of ongoing professional dialogue and collaboration

One participant summed it up well: “It was great. Very helpful in narrowing down what program is best for our school.”

This session was an important step forward in ensuring every school is supported in choosing an SSP that meets the needs of their learners—strengthening literacy outcomes across our system.

Social Justice Update: Laudato Si’ Week - Raise Hope, May 17th to May 24th

Ten Years of Inspiration and Action

10 years ago, the late Pope Francis wrote Laudato Si’, setting out a bold vision for our common home. While we celebrate 10 years of prayer and action together, we look ahead to an even brighter future. The next chapter of Laudato Si’ begins with us.

This anniversary year, the Year of Jubilee, the theme for Laudato Si' Week is Raise Hope, inspired by the Jubilee Year and its theme, Pilgrims of Hope. We are all called to raise hope by sharing the light that you’ve found in Laudato Si’. Aim to reach 10 people for the 10th anniversary of Laudato Si’ by simply listening, discerning and responding. This may include taking up an action towards living a sustainable lifestyle based on new learning and entering into dialogue about this change with a family member, colleague or friend.

Laudato Si’ Week is also a wonderful opportunity to acknowledge with gratitude the incredible inspiration of Pope Francis in caring for our common home and reconnect with our community of God. In this joyful moment, hope spreads around the world.

“Let us sing as we go. May our struggles and our concerns for this planet never take away the joy of our hope.”

Pope Francis, Laudato Si’ 244

It’s so exciting when the agenda and content of the meeting is led by our school-based colleagues - the experts on the ground.

We particularly thank Kate Farnham (St Patrick’s, Nhill) for her prayer and reflection about the fascinating Biblical Lexicon; Nicole Forbes (St Joseph’s, Penshurst) for leading an important and vulnerable conversation about the current realities in our schools and Jo Wheelahan for sharing the incredibly strategic Action Research taking place at St Thomas More, Alfredton.  We also thank Belinda Chiswell (CEB) for presenting an insightful session about effective peer observation and feedback practices, and Julie Cooper (CEB) for chairing the meeting and keeping us all on track!

We warmly encourage all Literacy Leaders – and anyone else who may be interested - to register for our Term 3 Forum on Friday 22nd August, as these events are a great opportunity for authentic conversation, story-sharing and collaboration. You may even feel inspired to present or co-present an agenda item (please email Emma if you’d like to do so: erutherford@ceob.edu.au).

Flare Primary Literacy Drop-In Sessions: Beginning in Term Two

There will be a ‘waiting room’ system, to allow for individual conversations.

Supporting Your SSP Selection

We would like to extend a big thank you to all the schools and staff who generously gave their time to present at our SSP Forum and to those in attendance. Your insights, experience, and commitment greatly enriched this event. We also appreciated your willingness to engage and network with others who are seeking to make informed decisions for their schools.  These contributions help foster a strong, collaborative community, and we are grateful for the ongoing support.
