Reflection - Laudato Si Week 2025

Ten Years Of Inspiration And Action

Ten years ago, Pope Francis wrote Laudato Si’, setting out a bold vision for our common home. While we celebrate 10 years of prayer and action together, we look ahead to an even brighter future. The next chapter of Laudato Si’ begins with us.

This week is Laudato Si Week in Australia. (to see more: Laudato Si Week) The global celebration of Laudato Si Week is actually  24th -31st May. The Australian Bishops have designated  the celebration of Laudato Si Week locally to be celebrated from 16th - 24th May. This is slightly different from the international celebration of Laudato Si week because of National Sorry Day (26th May) and National Reconciliation Week (27th May  –  3rd June) This allows acknowledgement and celebration of these significant Australian events.

The theme of Laudato Si Week 2025 is Raise Hope. In many ways each and every day across the schools of our Diocese that is the work that we do. We Raise Hope on so many levels. Once again, this Laudato Si Week  we take time to reflect on ways that we can Raise Hope for every part of creation, as we seek to bring the aspirations of Laudato Si to life in our lives and particularly in our school communities. Pope Francis in Laudato Si explains

“Saint Francis of Assisi reminds us  that our common home is like a sister with whom we share our life, and a beautiful mother who opens her arms to embrace us….

I wish to address every person living on this planet … I urgently appeal for a new dialogue about how we are shaping the future of our planet. We need a conversation which includes everyone, since the environmental challenge we are undergoing, and its human roots, concern and affect us all”  (Laudato Si’, 1, 14)

A Prayer for All Creation

Creator God, we give thanks for the gift of creation.

We give thanks for its beauty and the joy that beauty brings us.

We give thanks for light that shines in the darkness, for the stars and the sun, for the air we breathe and the plants and animals that you have created, for earth and water, and for the daily sustenance we draw from them.

Inspire us to see You, Creator, through all that You have created—all that you look upon as very good.

Help us to care for creation as You instructed us.

Help us be stewards of its abundant life.

We ask this through Christ, our Lord.

Amen.

From the Executive Director

Last week’s Diocesan Leadership Gathering in Horsham was an engaging and energising day. With insightful input from Pasi Sahlberg and Dave Runge, and the interactive “unpacking the pillars” session, we were able to explore our Strategy 2035 in new and meaningful ways. It was a valuable opportunity to reflect together on how the strategy connects with our shared vision and work across our Diocese.

As a follow-up, our stimulus piece this week is a thoughtful and powerful article by Professor Pasi Sahlberg titled “Test scores out, creative designers in to engage children.” This article strongly aligns with the thinking behind DOBCEL Strategy 2035, and I encourage you to take a few minutes to read and reflect on its message.

We released a media statement this week highlighting the support available to families experiencing financial hardship due to ongoing drought conditions. We know these conditions are placing significant strain on many of our communities, particularly those in agriculture, and we want to ensure no student’s access to a Catholic education is impacted by financial stress. I encourage you to have compassionate, confidential conversations with any families doing it tough. Support is available through the Family Fee Assistance Scheme and other local options. Read the full media release here.

Next week, we’ll come together in Robinvale for our final Network Collaboration Day for the Northern Zone. This will be another great opportunity to continue building momentum and connection across our schools in the region. Pasi, Dave and I are also looking forward to visiting St Joseph’s Charlton, St Mary’s Donald and St Patrick’s St Arnaud next week. These school visits are always a highlight and a great way to stay connected with the daily life of our school communities.

Yesterday, I attended the VCEA Capital and Infrastructure Committee meeting in Melbourne. The meeting covered a range of key policy, funding and operational matters relevant to Catholic education in Victoria. These discussions play an important role in shaping how we plan, resource and advocate for the needs of our schools, ensuring we continue to provide high-quality, accessible Catholic education for all families.

Today I’m attending a lunch with the Victorian Chamber and the Melbourne Press Club, where I’ll have the opportunity to hear from Treasurer Jaclyn Symes. As Treasurer, Minister for Regional Development and Minister for Agriculture, and a representative for Northern Victoria since 2014, Treasurer Symes plays a key role in shaping policy and investment in our region. This is a valuable opportunity to understand more about the state budget and what it means for our school communities.

Finally, I want to take a moment to recognise a truly significant milestone – the 50th anniversary of the ordination of Bishop Paul Bird. This is a remarkable achievement and a testament to a life of faithful service and leadership. On behalf of all schools across our Diocese, we offer our warmest congratulations and deepest gratitude to Bishop Paul for his unwavering commitment to our Catholic community.

Thank you once again for your ongoing commitment to Catholic education across our Diocese.

With best wishes,

Tom Sexton, Executive Director

Showcasing our Catholic Schools in Action

Indonesian Language Learning Ambassadors (ILLA) arrive in the Ballarat Diocese!

This semester, several schools in the Ballarat diocese (Damascus College, St Patrick’s Primary Ballarat, St Mary’s Hamilton, St Malachy’s Edenhope and St Joseph’s Penshurst) have participated in an Australian Government funded initiative called the Indonesian Language Learning Ambassadors (ILLA) program. The ILLA program provides Australian Government-funded scholars from Indonesia with an opportunity to directly engage with Australian schools and learn first-hand about Australian culture, community, and classroom teaching practices. It also enables ambassadors to share their skills and knowledge of the Indonesian language, culture, and customs with teachers and students, and establish local Australian community connections.

During this semester, senior students at St Patrick’s Primary, Ballarat have increased their knowledge, cultural perspective and enthusiasm about Indonesia through enriching activities provided by two Ambassadors, Bima and Benna, in the Indonesian and music classrooms. Benna was very musically talented so the students were also taught how to play Angklungs, an Indonesian musical instrument consisting of two to four bamboo tubes suspended in a bamboo frame.

St Joseph’s, Penshurst also participated in the program this semester receiving ILLA Ambassador, Nabilah, who is currently studying a Master of International Development Practice at Monash University. Years 3 – 6 students enjoyed discussing and trying different types of Indonesian foods with Nabilah. Junior year students had an opportunity to enjoy a fun, musical experience and learn the song, ‘Kepala, pundak, lutut, kaki (Heads, shoulders, knees and toes) with Nabilah who is also a musician! She taught two songs to the junior year students who enjoyed singing and dancing along with her.

A huge thank you to all our dedicated Indonesian teachers who have coordinated this rewarding intercultural experience for our students and the ILLA Ambassadors.

Little Feet, Big Footprints: Growing Young Leaders in Faith

Saint Brigid’s Primary School, Ballan, recently hosted Day 2 of the Little Feet, Big Footprints initiative, bringing together Year 6 students from St Patrick’s Gordon, St Augustine’s Creswick, St Mary’s Clarkes Hill, St Michael’s Daylesford, and Our Lady Help of Christians Wendouree.

The day focused on leadership, connection, and faith in action. Students heard from senior leaders from Ballarat secondary schools (Loreto College, Damascus College, and St Patrick’s College), and took part in a powerful session on Laudato Si’ and environmental care, led by DOBCEL Social Justice Education Officer, Sarah Page.

This initiative is a wonderful example of Catholic schools working together to form young leaders grounded in faith and community.

The collaboration between primary and secondary schools highlighted the strength of our Catholic education network - fostering mentorship, unity, and shared values.

Catholic Education in Action: Damascus Drama Students Take the Stage

Damascus College is proud to showcase Catholic education in action as senior Drama students prepare to present their original Unit 3 Drama Ensemble performances from 28–30 May at 7pm in the Valda Ward Auditorium.

These VCE assessment pieces, created around the thought-provoking theme of time, highlight students’ creativity, collaboration, and deep critical thinking. In a world where Father Time has gone missing, characters from across history must grapple with life in a timeless reality - offering a rich mix of comedy, drama, and spiritual reflection.

The performances are a testament to the vibrant learning that happens when faith and the arts come together. Students have embraced this challenge with passion and purpose, reflecting the Catholic values of community, creativity, and formation of the whole person.

All are welcome to attend. Seating is unreserved and no bookings are required. Come and support these talented students as they bring their learning to life on stage.

This performance season beautifully reflects how Catholic education nurtures students to grow as confident, creative, and compassionate young people - formed through faith, strengthened by community, and inspired by collaboration.

First Year Early Career Teachers

On Monday, our first-year Early Career Teachers came together for a dedicated day of professional learning focused on the theme of Communication, Connection and Relationships.

The day offered a rich program covering key topics to support our new teachers in their ongoing development. Sessions included Communication-Friendly Classrooms, Positive Behaviour Supports, Reportable Conduct, Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT) Requirements, and How to Approach Challenging Conversations. Each session was designed to provide practical strategies and guidance to help build strong, respectful, and effective relationships with students, colleagues, and families.

It was a valuable opportunity for early career teachers to learn, reflect, and connect with one another, reinforcing the importance of clear communication and positive relationships in every aspect of teaching. We are proud of all they have accomplished so far in their first year and look forward to supporting their continued growth.

Our next Early Career Teacher gathering is the annual retreat that is taking place on the 13th and 14th August. The venue will be Country Plaza Halls Gap. This is an opportunity for all early career teachers in their 1st , 2nd or 3rd years to:

Come together to build connections with each other, with creation and the possibility of being open to God's presence.

Provide an opportunity for our early career teachers to have valuable time to nurture their own spirits.

Gain strategies to enhance their own wellbeing .

Explore and experience rich spiritual practices from the Catholic story and vision and how these may be able to be experienced in their own lives.

This annual gathering is a highlight and is very valued by our Early Career Teachers. It is intentionally designed for 1st , 2nd and 3rd Years teacher to participate together. This experience is always invitational in nature.

Flare Primary Literacy Leaders’ Forum

A huge thank you to all the Literacy Leaders from both Guided and Self-Guided schools who came along to the Term 2 Literacy Leaders’ Forum on Tuesday 13th May. It was amazing to see high levels of sharing and collaboration across a wide range of schools, and all participants came away feeling energised and inspired. It’s so exciting when the agenda and content of the meeting is led by our school-based colleagues - the experts on the ground.

We particularly thank Kate Farnham (St Patrick’s, Nhill) for her prayer and reflection about the fascinating Biblical Lexicon; Nicole Forbes (St Joseph’s, Penshurst) for leading an important and vulnerable conversation about the current realities in our schools and Jo Wheelahan for sharing the incredibly strategic Action Research taking place at St Thomas More, Alfredton.  We also thank Belinda Chiswell (CEB) for presenting an insightful session about effective peer observation and feedback practices, and Julie Cooper (CEB) for chairing the meeting and keeping us all on track!

We warmly encourage all Literacy Leaders – and anyone else who may be interested - to register for our Term 3 Forum on Friday 22nd August, as these events are a great opportunity for authentic conversation, story-sharing and collaboration. You may even feel inspired to present or co-present an agenda item (please email Emma if you’d like to do so: erutherford@ceob.edu.au).
