From the Acting Executive Director

I am delighted to be standing in for Executive Director Tom Sexton over the next four weeks as he embarks on overseas travel.

On behalf of Tom and the Board I thank and congratulate you all for your dedicated work over what has clearly been an incredibly busy and productive Term 3.

These are exciting times for all of us in DOBCEL, as we work towards finalising and activating the new DOBCEL Strategy 2035, aimed at continuing our vision of “fullness of life for all”.

A DOBCEL delegation of Board Chair Terry Harney and Director Kathleen Donnellan, Executive Director Tom Sexton, Deputy Director - Catholic Education, Matt Byrne and Principals’ representative Michelle Hausler (MacKillop College, Swan Hill), will travel to Canada next week to engage with a number of Canadian education jurisdictions who have recently travelled journeys of deepening their own understanding of system improvement.

Following Canada, Tom and Terry Harney, will travel to the UK to attend the launch of the Commonwealth 75th Anniversary publication at Westminster Abbey on 9 October. This publication, featuring a story on our DOBCEL schools’ efforts to provide opportunities for the ‘fullness of life’ across the diocese, will be distributed to more than 400,000 individuals and organisations around the Commonwealth.

Once again, please accept my thanks and best wishes for a safe, happy, and rejuvenating holiday period.

With best wishes

Megan Ioannou,

Deputy Director Stewardship/Acting Executive Director

Early Career Teacher check-ins Term 4

As planning for the 2025 Early Career Teacher Program begins and we reflect on the 2024 Program, we would like to engage with Early Career Teachers (ECTs) to provide the opportunity to engage and reflect on their successes and an opportunity to discuss where additional development can be provided at a system level.

To enable this, the Early Career Teacher program in term 4 is individual check-in conversations intended to share the successes and challenges of 2024. ECTs will be asked to share their experience engaging in the early career teacher program, their experience in schools as an ECT and for CEB staff to provide any further individualised advice or feedback during the call.

Anyone who has participated in an early career teacher session in terms 1,2 and 3 will receive contact via email from a CEB staff member in week 1 of term 4, inviting you to engage in this check-in conversation. Check-in conversations are expected to be held during week 3 of term (between 21-25 October) but we will work with each ECT to find a suitable time. It is expected these calls will take no longer than 30 minutes.  The engagement is intended to be a supportive structure and, as such, is not compulsory- however we would highly encourage participation.

If you have not been able to participate in the Early Career Teacher Program in 2024 but would like someone from the CEB office to make contact with you for a check-in conversation, please email Fiona Murphy or Sarah Hanley who will organise this for you.

We look forward to working with Early Career Teachers from around Diocese again in term 4 and into 2025!

Leadership Development – Pilot Program offerings for 2024

In 2024, significant progress has been made on the co-creation of the DOBCEL strategy 2035, as well as the development of a DOBCEL competency framework focused on school leadership. While the final detail of this work is still being refined, we have an emerging sense of what the results will be.

To ensure that future leadership programs are aligned with our strategic direction and provide the opportunity to develop the right skills and behaviours, a series of pilot leadership workshops are being offered in 2024.

These programs are designed to build capability in areas aligned to our strategic direction with the intention of integrating these programs into a more comprehensive leadership development calendar in 2025.

Cost - $0

Each of these programs will be run as a pilot program with the costs of the program covered by DOBCEL.

As part of attending the program, all participants agree to provide their identifiable feedback on things such as the program's contents, effectiveness, and suggestions for improvement. Participants will be asked to provide feedback at the conclusion of the workshop and may also receive follow-up contact after the workshop for further feedback.

LAUDATO SI’ in action - Social Justice Reflection

“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” John 14:27

2024 Global Peace Day Theme: Cultivating a Culture of Peace

This year marks the 25th anniversary of the United Nations General Assembly’s adoption of the Declaration and Programme of Action on a Culture of Peace. Learn more here.

Poems for Peace

Young people living in conflict use poetry to express their hopes for a more peaceful future.

Around the world, millions of children are growing up in conflict. Caught in the crossfires of war, these children are uniquely vulnerable. They are often uprooted from home or exposed to extreme trauma. It is much harder for them to access healthcare or education. And too often, warring parties flout one of the most basic rules of war: the protection of children.

With Poems for Peace, UNICEF gives children a platform to explain in their own words the impact of conflict and war on their lives – and their hopes and dreams for the future. By amplifying the voices of children, UNICEF is highlighting the extraordinary strength and courage of young people longing for a more stable future.

To hear the stories and poems from children across the world, click  the link below Poems for Peace | UNICEF

Called to Action - Minute of Silence/Moment of Peace

Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Graduation Dinner

The Victorian Catholic Education Authority (VCEA), in collaboration with the four Victorian Dioceses, held a dinner last Friday evening to honour the 2024 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Year 12 graduating students. Attendees gathered at the Catholic Leadership Centre in East Melbourne to celebrate the achievements and individual journeys of these students. Students, families and school personnel listened to the opening address from VCEA CEO Professor Elizabeth Labone and keynote speaker Professor Mark Rose, whose speech encouraged the students to be proud of their identity and culture, and to consider the many educational, training and work options available now and in the future

It was a privilege to be present and hear the educational journeys and the different pathways of students, and the never-ending support of the families and school staff.

This year, 155 Year 12 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students from Catholic schools in Victoria are set to graduate and we wish them all the best.

Discovering a ‘Good Read’: Pathways to Reading for Australian Teens

Between March 2022 and June 2023 several DOBCEL schools participated in a research project - funded by the Australian Research Council and industry partners, and conducted by Deakin University - about book discovery and reading for pleasure among Australian teens. The research in the report explores the intersection of digital and cultural influences on teen reading. It combines interviews with educational and book industry professionals, focus groups, and a nationally representative survey of 13,217 Australian secondary school students.

This comprehensive research project offers educators valuable insights into the reading patterns of Australian teens, and highlights the urgent need for strategies which foster a reading culture in the digital age.

Victorian Curriculum F-10 Implementation

The graphic below displays the expected implementation of the Victorian Curriculum 2.0 within DOBCEL schools.

Teaching Excellence Program

The Teaching Excellence Program (TEP) enables highly skilled teachers to further advance their capability and confidence in teaching. The TEP is open to highly skilled teachers with a minimum of 3 years’ teaching experience from the government, Independent and Catholic sectors, and across all classroom settings.

AI Working Party – Update on Progress

In recent months, a select group of CEB staff, educators, and principals have been exploring and discussing the applications of Generative AI within our diocese. These virtual sessions have been highly informative, allowing participants to exchange insights and experiences. Currently, the group is examining various frameworks to guide broader adoption and provide recommendations for schools interested in using GenAI.

Our goal is to offer greater clarity and context for schools navigating this rapidly evolving field. Some members are developing small case studies that demonstrate how these align with our chosen framework, along with other support materials for schools. We are aiming to have some of this work shared with schools early Term 4.

If you missed earlier communications about this group, or wish to get involved, please contact Coby Reynolds at creynolds@dobcel.catholic.edu.au
